"On a recent public performance in Japan, Smoke on the Water was played using Traditional Japanese musical instruments, including three-string guitar.
The lyrics are about a fire-fighting in Edo period (1600-1868). The vocals are done in a Japanese traditional way.
The scat is a way of singing called "Kiyari," which was used during fire-fighting." From the official Richie Blackmore & Blackmore's Night website
